Coming of Age – Whatever You Do, Don’t Fall On The Set!
I was introduced to the Set my first night at FAMU. Anything that was worth observing could be observed from the Set. Situated in the middle of campus, near the student union and the cafeteria, it was the place to see and be seen. It didn’t matter if walking through the Set was the most efficient path to take to get to wherever you were headed, you still passed through to check out the scene. And, if your outfit was especially fly, you made sure to make your way to the Set at some point on that day.
There was one thing that you didn’t want to be seen doing on the Set. A trip or a fall on the Set was the ultimate no-no. Losing your footing on the Set could strip you of all your cool points, which of course is a really big deal when you are eighteen years old. It would be the talk around campus for at least a day or two – ” Yo! Did you see <insert name of clumsy student> fall on the Set?!?”
The dynamics of the Set provided an education of sorts. It wasn’t long before I began to notice some interesting things. Particularly how the male and female species related with each other. What girls were willing to do to get attention from the guys and how the guys responded to these efforts. Now that isn’t to say that I wasn’t caught up in some of the same shenanigans as my other classmates (I can recall going out of my way to stroll through the Set a time or two). But, one thing that I never did was fall on the Set!
