Don’t Give Up The Race Before It Starts

A couple of years ago my daughter, who was ten at the time, learned a life lesson about positive thinking (mom and dad also learned a lesson about putting too much pressure on a ten year-old, but that is another post for another day).

It was the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation’s State Championship meet and my little track star had been working hard all summer on her 400M race. Sitting at the top of her age group, she was poised to have a big showing – certain to medal and possibly win the Gold if she had a good semi-final and final race. At the start of her semi-final heat, she threw up at the starting line. Not having been in this situation before, she really didn’t know what to do so when the starting judge came to her she let him walk her off the track.

Baby girl wasn’t sick – she had worked herself up into a bundle of nerves. She was worried about not doing well and she was worried about another girl who was also expected to do very well in the race. My advice to her was to never give up on herself and no matter how good you think the competition is, you have to believe in yourself and your abilities. I told her that she should never give the race over to anyone by not showing up – make them earn it on the track!

Now, everything in life is not a competition…or maybe it is but sometimes the competitor is yourself as you work to improve in various areas of your own life. No matter what, the lesson is still the same. You must think you can if you are to be able to accomplish anything. And, you must not give up on yourself before you even try (this often comes in the form of self-doubt, avoiding a challenge etc.).

So, my friends, as we continue to try to stick to our 2013 resolutions, just remember that You (and I) Can Do It!!

Now how’s that for some hump day motivation (wooohooooo!!!)

P.S. While my advice to my daughter may seem a little over the top for a ten year-old, it was said with a lot of love and a big hug 🙂
