31 Days :: Day 30 – I Hope You Dance

I Hope You Dance

After a really good run, when I get back home, I often find myself dancing – unabashedly.  That is just how good I feel after putting in a few good miles.  And every time I do this, I think about the wonderful, wonderful song I Hope You Dance (written by Mark D. Sanders and Tia Sillers and originally sung by Lee Ann Womack in 2000).  The lyrics to this song capture exactly what I wish for myself and what I wish for every single person on this planet.  It is what allows me to occasionally let down my guard and do a little jig for no other reason than that I’m feeling joyful.  It is what allows me to give myself permission to not be buttoned up all the time and to give my children a little leeway to enjoy the wonder of the world from their own unique perspective.  (This may seem like an easy thing to do, but I am naturally wound pretty tightly, so this takes some effort for me.)

Here are the lyrics:

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder, You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger, May you never take one single breath for granted, GOD forbid love ever leave you empty handed, I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean, Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens, Promise me that you’ll give faith a fighting chance, And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.I hope you dance….I hope you dance.

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance,
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Livin’ might mean takin’ chances but they’re worth takin’,
Lovin’ might be a mistake but it’s worth makin’,
Don’t let some hell bent heart leave you bitter,
When you come close to sellin’ out reconsider,
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.

I hope you dance….I hope you dance.
I hope you dance….I hope you dance.
(Time is a wheel in constant motion always rolling us along,
Tell me who wants to look back on their years and wonder where those years have gone.)

I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean,
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens,
Promise me that you’ll give faith a fighting chance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.

Dance….I hope you dance.
I hope you dance….I hope you dance.
I hope you dance….I hope you dance..
(Time is a wheel in constant motion always rolling us along
Tell me who wants to look back on their years and wonder where those years have gone)

And for your viewing pleasure, here’s a rendition of the song by Gladys Knight:
